Inspiring Writing with Young Children

Workshop Description Children naturally love to write, create, and ‘make stuff’. Learn how to create a writing workshop in your classroom. Well thought out writing workshops that include mini lessons, independent writing time, sharing opportunities, and the right tools of the trade encourage students to use writing as a one of the most wonderful and powerful ways of communicating. Be part of an actual writing workshop and use a variety of tools, books, and resources that support the writing workshop concept. We will also introduce you to FableVision’s Stationery Studio®, an easy-to-use software program that lets students and teachers customize and print motivational writing paper for stories, letters, reports, shape books, mini-books, and countless other creative projects.
Designed for:  

Classroom teachers preK-5, reading/language arts teachers, library/media staff, pre-service teachers and educators.
Duration Six hours, includes an hour for lunch.
Educators will...
  • Investigate the elements of a strong writing program and a rich writing environment:: what does it look, feel, and sound like?
  • Explore the components of the writing process: setting, writing tools, prompts, index cards, rubrics, free writing, peer editing, teaching editing, time for reflection, writing across the curriculum.
  • Learn how to use Stationery Studio and start using your own copy today!
    *Shapes and Borders organized by themes
    *Line styles: no lines, three styles of lines, primary lines, standard lines
    *Line width and line color
    *Layouts: whole page, top of page, bottom of page, columns, business letter, friendly letter, envelope
    *How to enter text, change font size, align text, and change color.
    *How to choose a variety of stationery, and explore print options.
    *Explore a variety of classroom activities and sample projects.
    *Import digital pictures or images from the Internet
    *Create projects from the Photo Gallery
    *Learn about other resouces.

Workshop Strands

This workshop will be divided into three strands during the day dealing with Imagination, Discovery, and Sharing.

  • Imagination:

Discuss the varied elements of a rich and authentic writing progam where kids write in different ways and for a variety of purposes throughout the day.

  • Discovery:
Discover the creative possibilities when using Stationery Studio to make writing paper tailored to your specific lessons and individual students.
  • Sharing:
Create and adapt writing paper, notepads, invitations, etc. that you can use right away with your students to support your own classroom curriculum.
Everyone will take home: A single user license of Stationery Studio and a variety of things they make during the workshop.
Certificates for Professional Development Certificates of completion will be handed out at the end of the session. Those requiring additional hours can make indivdual arrangments with the presenter.
