FableVision CEO Peter H. Reynolds Receives Honorary Doctorate

After Delivering Commencement Address at Fitchburg State College
Encourages Graduates to Be Brave Enough to Follow Their Dreams

BOSTON, MA - July 6 , 2007 - Author/Illustrator and FableVision CEO/Founder Peter H. Reynolds made a trip back to his alma mater to deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary doctoral degree in humane letters. Reynolds, a highly successful alumnus of the college, presented the address to graduates of Fitchburg State College’s 111th commencement ceremony on May 19th. Reynolds was awarded the title Litterarum Humanarum Doctor (L.H.D.) because of his substantial contributions to education and the arts. A New York Times Best Selling author/illustrator and Founder/CEO of the award-winning children’s media company FableVision, Reynolds graduated from Fitchburg State with a bachelor’s degree in communications media in 1983 and received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 1999. He also studied at Massachusetts College of Art before returning to FSC to continue his studies.

Reynolds, a vocal advocate of public schools and the state education system, spoke to over two thousand Fitchburg State graduates, family, friends and members of the college community. During the commencement address, Reynolds queried the audience. ‘How would you like me to read you story?’ After an enthusiastic response, he read one of his award-winning books, titled "The Dot," which tells of Vashti a young girl who discovers she can draw after a teacher urges her in a very creative way. After overcoming her own fears, Vashti becomes famous for her many dot paintings and sculptures. "I was lucky enough to have teachers along the journey who believed in me and helped me be brave enough to make my mark. That’s my wish for every graduate–to make your mark and see where it takes you.²

Peter Reynolds is a successful author, illustrator, animator, filmmaker, and owner of The Blue Bunny Book & Toy Shop in historic Dedham, MA. He started FableVision with his identical twin brother Paul Reynolds in 1996. Their goal was to develop and publish educational media, with a commitment to creating ‘positive programming and products that help all learners navigate
their full potential.’ FableVision has hosted many full-time interns from Fitchburg State College over the past decade and has hired several in full-time and contract positions. The duo added The Blue Bunny retail venture to their accomplishments in 2003 and recently expanded the store, which is now located directly across from the Dedham Community Theatre. The Blue Bunny is the ‘little shop with a big mission,’ Reynolds explains, adding, ‘It is part of our mission to inspire creativity and self expression in kids and grown up kids – we want to celebrate life-long learning.”

Reynolds is the award-winning author and illustrator of “The North Star,” “The Dot,” and “Ish,” as well as illustrator for the best selling “Judy Moody” and its offshoot “Stink” series. His most recent book about a mother’s wish for her child to live life to its fullest called “Someday” rocketed to No. 1 position on the New York Times Best Seller children’s list in early April, and has been in the top 5 for several months.
