FableVision Studios Lands Deal for Educational TV/Web Series with CTW/Nickelodeon's Noggin Network

Futuristic Shows Target Kids 6-12 And Feature On-Line Interactive Elements

Watertown, MA--
Boston-based FableVision Studios recently secured a TV/on-line development deal with Noggin, the new 24-hour educational network for kids from Nickelodeon and the Children's Television Workshop. The deal has already put two animated short form series into production based on two original stories by author/illustrator/educator Peter H. Reynolds. FableVision will create the futuristic Cecile and Her Very Own Universe and Swamp Dog for broadcast on Noggin in early 2000. With on-line and television quickly merging, both educational shows combine both television and Internet elements, and target the older half of Noggin's audience, kids 6-12.
"There aren't many new quality educational shows being made for kids 6-12, particularly animated shows, yet we know that cartoons are hugely popular with this age group," commented Noggin General Manager Tom Ascheim. "FableVision's philosophy about kids, learning and interactivity is a perfect fit with Noggin's belief in kid-driven learning. They also have a unique combination of heart and edge which we've rarely seen in one place."

The Boston-based FableVision Studios, led by Emmy Award-winning author/illustrator/educator Peter H. Reynolds, has set itself apart for its unique character design, emphasis on original storytelling and state-of the-art digital animation. "At FableVision, we're committed to stories that matter, and in combining great storytelling and learning for kids. Noggin is a perfect partner for us because they want to reach exactly the kind of creative, thoughtful, and curious viewers we do," said Mr. Reynolds. FableVision Studios' Animation Director Gary Goldberger is equally excited, "This Noggin-FableVision partnership leverages the best in old-fashioned storytelling and cutting edge technology - and continues to brand Boston as a new hub for thoughtful, cutting-edge animation." Goldberger also directed two original stories by Peter Reynolds, (The Blue Shoe and Living Forever) which have been honored in over two dozen film festivals and award competitions around the world. FableVision's John Lechner and Matt Ducharme provided lead animation for both films.

The two animated series are:
Noggin/FableVision Series One: Cecile and Her Very Own Universe

A cartoon heroine for the new millennium, Cecile is a 12-year-old girl living in the huge, sprawling underground future world of Metro. She has a bionic arm, a canine computerized companion, and a secret. While everyone else is busy digging to the center of the gigantic planet, Cecile is doing the opposite. They don't know that she has a life "on the surface" where her curiosity leads her again and again. What she learns there lies at the heart of this unusual series, and her private diaries posted on Noggin.com will provide an intimate glimpse into her thoughts and feelings, and hopefully inspire viewers to chronicle their own thoughts and experiences. While tapping into kids' natural passion for science fiction, the series is designed to model the joy of discovery, exploration and curiosity through a young girl's insatiable appetite for learning. Cecile generates her own questions, investigates the unknown, and joyfully shares her discoveries with others. Her character embodies a never-ending delight for learning.

Noggin/FableVision Series Two: Swamp Dog

Gyro's life of roving the galaxies with his father's traveling circus of rusting mechanical animals ought to be the envy of any boy his age. But the 10-year-old's yearning for a real live pet leaves him feeling empty and his father, exasperated. When Gyro encounters an enormous creature emerging from the waters of a radioactively enhanced swamp, the boy and beast become fast and secret friends. How do you keep an 800 pound secret? Kids on-line will contribute their own sage advice. Touching on themes such as internal beauty, appreciation of nature, and social learning, Swamp Dog recognizes the innate wisdom of kids and encourages them to be guided by their own constellations.

Noggin, the first ever thinking network for kids, now reaches 4.2 million households. Exploding the boundaries between television and on-line, Noggin is a unique interactive network aimed at kids 2-12 from educational children's TV pioneers Nickelodeon and the Children's Television Workshop. Its breakthrough mission is to serve kids' natural desire to learn by creating a place-- on television and on-line-- where learning is driven by them. Using "What Sparks You?" as a slogan, Noggin celebrates kids' natural excitement for learning by asking kids themselves to help shape the network's agenda and steer its content.

Peter Reynolds' career has been dedicated to artfully combining technology, media and storytelling. Peter heads FableVision Studios which produces quality books, museum exhibits, web content and television programming for children and adults, as well as broadcasters, publishers and on-line entertainment providers. Other recent creative properties in development are an early reader chapter book with Candlewick Press called Judy Moody" and two books for children called Serendipity and Sydney's Star.
