October 2006 FableVision's FableFlash
A FableFlash Message from Peter H. Reynolds
Why Celebrate Art for Only One Week?
We recently celebrated Start the Art Week sponsored by the National Parent Teacher Association (PTA) in conjunction with Americans for the Arts as part of National Arts & Humanities month.

But we'd ask, "Is a week-long celebration enough to ensure that the spirit of creativity is protected and nurtured in our schools?" I created a poster (left) that plays out the idea of a "LIFE-LONG celebration". If we want students to express what they know, then we need to INCREASE the bandwidth of their creative expression - in ways that are congruent with their unique talents, gifts and styles. To nurture a new generation of creative, problem-solvers - who will take on the challenges our planet faces - this needs OUR best, most creative thinking all year long.

Hope you enjoy the creative thinking in this issue of the FableFlash and that we see you at our party on December 1st in our new home at the Boston Children's Museum. We'll also be celebrating FableVision's 10th Anniversary - and hope you can join the fun!

Want John Lithgow to Help Your Kids Read?
Knowledge Adventure Books by You Software is Here!
Our friends at Knowledge Adventure, along with John Lithgow at Lithgow Palooza recently tapped FableVision on the shoulder to help create Knowledge Adventure Books by You. This new software application inspires the love of reading by getting kids to help publish a real book! Already awarded an "A" rating from Children's Technology Review, Knowledge Adventure Books By You serves as a "ghostwriter" - prompting you with questions that end up personalizing the book.

Award-winning actor and author John Lithgow works as your “muse,” guiding you with tips and humorous coaching. Add your own pictures, write a dedication, and create your own book cover. Then print it at home, email it, or even order a professionally produced hardcover edition of your book to keep forever.

The Knowledge Adventure team, headed by Leslie House and Beny Levy, along with Lithgow Palooza and FableVision also created the Knowledge Adventure Books By You website. It features more great writing resources, including additional downloadable artwork that can be used in the

Essay Express Gets Campy
Creative Way to Build Confidence in Essay Writing
Krista Demas, a learning specialist at Milton Academy in Milton, MA and Susan Taber, M.Ed., learning specialist, hosted an 8-day summer writing camp called "The Write Way to School Success". The camp gives soon-to-be 5th graders the strategies that they need as writing becomes a more independent process.

The camp featured Essay Express software produced by FableVision, which helps even the most reluctant writers tackle essay writing - even under the pressure of testing. Krista shares, "Essay Express was used as a catalyst for the strategy instruction. The students loved the software . . . They were walking around singing [Essay Express songs] and were even able to explain the strategies to their parents on the last day."

Krista notes, "The biggest difference that I see is that the students feel better, more confident, and are at ease about writing and about working at their own pace – although their pace has increased across the board." That's music to OUR ears!

Messages of Peace Connect Kids in America and Iraq
A Story That Matters, A Story That Moves
As the war in Iraq continues to intensify, we wanted to put the spotlight on Ruth Mendelson, our good friend and exceedingly talented Grammy-listed music composer and multi- instrumentalist. She and her non-profit group Eagle Vision Initiatives have unveiled a very important initiative called "Well Wishes and Blessings: Kids in America to Iraq."

Ruth spent much of 2006 traveling across the country recording U.S. children's well wishes for the children in Iraq. The resulting artful mix iof voice and music is a moving "audio postcard" that is a nourishing gift for people of all ages.

The CD has been recognized by the Grammy Society for consideration as a 2007 winner in the Best Spoken Word LP and Best Children’s Spoken Word LP categories.

We hope the CD gets the Grammy spotlight so these children's voices amplify around the world. THIS is a story that matters - a story that moves!

SPOTLIGHT WORD OF THE MONTH - LIMELIGHT

Do you know the story behind the word “limelight”?
The word limelight finds its origins on the stage. As early as the 1820s, the mineral known as quicklime, or lime, was used to light theater lights. The burning of this lime produced an intense white light when heated with a flame. Today, limelight has less to do with the quicklime itself and more to do with those who stand in the center of its light.
