May 2006 FableVision's FableFlash
A FableFlash Message from Peter & Paul
    Commencement Season: "The Beginning"!
We just received a wonderful note from Sue Pandiani - one of the original educators who collaborated with Peter nearly a decade ago to adapt THE NORTH STAR book themes for her 3rd grade class (resulting in the publishing of NORTH STAR INSPIRATION FOR THE CLASSROOM.) The note came with a letter from Angie Hartley - one of the original "North Star Navigators" - and she is now GRADUATING from HIGH SCHOOL!

How do we measure the effectiveness of THE NORTH STAR approach? Angie's own words (read below) help explain just how transformational even a year of truly learner-centric "curriculum" can be.

This is what makes our work so gratifying. At FableVision we are not obsessed with teaching drill- and-fill "content" - we are simply helping ALL learners discover how to navigate a meaningful journey – with creative tools that support individual learning styles and unique strengths/gifts. This is a journey that will lead them to nurturing their full potential.

Wishing YOU a continued & meaningful journey - and hoping we can help inspire you and those you are guiding.

Peter & Paul Reynolds, CEO and President, FableVision-Boston

A Special Note from a "North Star Navigator"
Original North Star Students Graduate High School!
Here's an excerpt of the lovely note written to teacher Sue Pandiani from Angie Hartley (front row, orange shirt), one of her original "North Star Navigators" 3rd grade class students who is now graduating High School.

A few months ago my art class visited the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art where we were reminded, once again of you and our journeys. While leafing through the gift shop, Danny Dobbins, Kayla Lopez and I stumbled upon “Ish” and “The Dot”. The three of us immediately plopped ourselves down on the hard tile floor and poured over the two beautiful books. The light of our North Stars was suddenly rekindled amongst the clouds of adulthood in this scene reminiscent of story time in your third grade classroom.

I truly believe that our year with you will stay with us for our lifetime. Danny, Kayla and I accredit you and Peter for showing us our paths and inspiring us to work with children. In fact, Danny plans on becoming an art teacher like that of Peter’s publication and will study art at UMass Dartmouth next year. Kayla is taking a long journey beginning at Bridgewater State to become a pediatrician. I will be majoring in elementary education and dance at Keene State. I am constantly reminded of you as I start to follow my new dreams and begin a new journey. I have you to thank for illuminating my dreams so long ago.

Thank you Angie for taking the time to share this important moment on your journey. You and the other original "North Star Navigators" inspire us to keep doing what we do!

A Conversation with Dr. Margaret Wheatley
MESPA Conference Keynote Offers Vision for Innovative Leadership
FableVision President Paul Reynolds recently had a chance to meet Dr. Margaret Wheatley (Leadership and the New Science) in person at the MESPA Conference on Cape Cod in early May. Dr. Wheatley was sharing the themes of her new book FINDING OUR WAY: LEADERSHIP FOR AN UNCERTAIN TIME, which connected deeply with this group of elementary school principals who are facing extraordinary challenges in their schools. Her words are a comforting and simple reminder of what we intuitively recognize as the only solution, “There is a simpler, finer way to organize human endeavor. This simpler way is demonstrated to us in daily life . . . when we see people helping each other, when we feel creative, when we know we’re making a difference, when life feels purposeful.”

Margaret spoke about this “purposeful model” of leadership in a connected universe. She outlined a very different alternative to the historic model of “command and control” – offering a new vision that is inclusive, collaborative, conversation-rich and compassionate. The crowd gave her a standing ovation – and we know the ripples will make their way into the leadership network in Massachusetts and beyond.

Paul shares, “We’ve always been a fan of Wheatley’s work and this book and these messages continue to nourish us with the ideas and inspiration to do what we must to reach EVERY learner and help them reach their full potential.” Paul delivered a piece of original art and signed copies of THE DOT and ISH from Peter H. Reynolds who was in NYC at the time, but we do hope the pair will get to meet over tea someday and compare notes on how to bring the world to a better place!

National Spotlight Shines on FV's "Girls in Science" Efforts
www.iwaswondering.org catches attention of DISCOVER & SCIENCE Magazines!
The national spotlight is on www.iWASwondering.org, an exciting new resource developed and created by FableVision and the National Academy of Sciences to get girls interested in science. Featuring 14 year old animated host Lia (star of The LIA Project) the new website is designed to tackle the alarming decline of women in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math.

The iWASwondering.org website offers a chance to meet ten cool scientists, explore a time travel feature, read interactive comic books, and play games that makes science - well, cool for young kids. The iWASwondering site is the companion to the popular book series Womens Adventures in Science (Joseph Henry Press). Discover Magazine just featured the site and raves "...the best laughs are to be found on an accompanying website, www.iWASwondering.org, which complements the books with cartoons and games introduced by a sassy lass with blue-streaked locks named Lia. This gal thinks scientists are cooler than rock stars: Shirley Ann Jackson, recites Lia in an excited crescendo, "explores the invisible particles that make up everything in the universe, including you and me and your computer and Limburger cheese and the rings of Saturn and even giant squids!"

The website was also just featured in the prestigious journal Science- a publication of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Nice to see the light shining on Lia and iWASwondering! Now let's see if we spark interest in the young kids we're trying to reach. :-)
