Words And Their Stories™:
Spotlight
Word of the
Month
|
Accolade comes from the French accoler, meaning "to embrace," which has its origins in the Italian verb accollare, meaning "to embrace around the neck." When a soldier was made a knight, part of the ceremony involved this act of embracing him around the neck. Today, accolade does not refer to a literal embracing around the neck, but to what this embrace represents. Now you know that accolade means "an expression of approval; a special acknowledgment, honor, or award; to praise."
