February 2007 FableVision's FableFlash
A FableFlash Message from Paul Reynolds
    Greetings from Frosty FableVision
While we shiver in the cold and ice here in blustery Boston, we have been busy launching an event next week in cooperation with Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick's Office as part of Entrepreneurship Week USA. We were approached by a very good friend at the Kauffman Foundation who loves Peter's book THE DOT - and felt that this story captures the essence of entrepreneurship - getting people to be brave enough to try something completely new and stay with it. One thing led to another and we are happy to be unveiling the "MAKING OUR MARK!" event at the Massachusetts State House on Monday February 26th at 4pm. (See details below!)

Meanwhile, the rest of FableVision is buzzing with activity - with projects underway with PBS Kids Play!, Corporation for Public Broadcasting/PBS TeacherLine, Learning.com, National Academy of Sciences, National Archives to name just a few. And the conference season is well underway, with Peter criss-crossing the nation as he speaks to educators from Florida to Texas and soon Michigan and California. Peter also has a few new books out including SOMEDAY - about a mother's dream for her child to live life to its fullest.

We're also enjoying many of you visiting our new home here by the Boston harbor on Children's Wharf at the Boston Children's Museum. This new "creative learning campus" includes JumpStart, Citizen Schools and the Museum Institute for Teaching Science. Hope to see you here too - just let us know and we'll put the kettle on and roll out the red carpet!

Onward,
Paul
Paul A. Reynolds, President
P.S. Congrats to Dr. Peggy Healy Stearns and the FableVision development team for landing the 2007 ALA Notable Software for Children award!

He adds, "At FableVision, we are mapping this on to new strategies to reach kids and educators who need a more creative and innovative approach to authentic learning." FableVision Unveils “Theory2Practice” for University Students
Connecting Classroom Best Practices to Higher Education
FableVision is pleased to introduce the Theory2Practice initiative for universities and colleges, specifically where undergraduate and graduate students are eager to learn about best practices in the classroom. We were thrilled when the first school to join this initiative was historic Framingham State College. Founded by Horace Mann, the college is the first publicly supported college originally dedicated to the preparation of teachers.

According to Professor Diane Lowe, “I was introduced to Stationery Studio in a graduate student’s classroom and immediately thought of numerous possibilities for this software. I contacted FableVision and learned of other, equally as promising programs. I am delighted to be able to introduce the students at Framingham State College to these software programs through the Theory2Practice Initiative.”

Under the Theory2Practice initiative, participating colleges and universities will be licensed to run Stationery Studio, BrainCogs, Essay Express, and Get A Clue in designated computer labs and classrooms. Faculty will also have access to the software, and students may purchase the products at a discounted price. If you’re a college professor or administrator interested in learning more about FableVision’s Theory2Practice initiative, please contact Carol M. Donahue, Director of Learning Solutions: carol@fablevision.com

SPOTLIGHT WORD OF THE MONTH - NOCTURNAL

Do you know the story behind the word “nocturnal”?
The word nocturnal goes back to the Latin word nocturnes, which comes from the Latin root noct or nox, meaning "night." People sometimes confuse this word with a word that means its exact opposite. Diurnal comes from the Latin word diurnus and the Latin root dies, meaning "day." If you remember how different night and day are, you should be able to keep nocturnal and diurnal straight.
Build your middle and high school students' vocabulary with FableVision’s Get A Clue.
