February 2006 FableVision's FableFlash
A FableFlash Message from Peter & Paul
    A Time for Bravery . . .
We just have returned for a short rest amid our international & national travels - Peter in Mexico, NYC KidScreen Summit, keynoting at Louisiana CUE, Paul at TCEA in Austin, Texas (also for Paul's mid-year Pepperdine graduate studies meeting). No matter where we go, we hear the stories of educators who are working tirelessly to reach ALL learners and bring the world to a better place.

We must do what it takes to protect the innovative educator, the curious spirit of each learner, the wonder of discovery, the messy and fruitful mistakes, the sheer joy of learning every day for the rest of our lives.

If we want original thinkers, creative problem-solvers, then it’s time for children and grown up children to follow their North Star and create a "personalized curriculum" congruent with one's own interests, gifts, strengths, and learning styles. We've found many educators, like you, who share this mission - and together we will keep making classrooms more wonderful places. Keep in touch - and let us know how we can support you in any way.

Peter & Paul Reynolds, CEO and President, FableVision-Boston

P.S. As part of Paul's Pepperdine University Action Research Project, we are researching, designing and launching a new web- based North Star Virtual Community. If you're using The North Star in your school and would like to be involved in this project, email Paul at paul@fablevision.com.

Visits by Peter H. Reynolds...Now a Virtual Reality
Bring Author Visits & Professional Development to Your Desktop!
During the past year, hundreds of organizations have contacted FableVision regarding a personal visit with Author/Illustrator Peter H. Reynolds. We only wish there were enough hours and days for Peter to accept each and every invitation. But here's the good news . . .

After the resounding success of using web-based Elluminate Live to visit 2000 students in Pennsylvania, we have now officially launched our FableVision Virtual Visit Program! Peter can now deliver his message, his stories and his incredible art to your school site or any place with an Internet connection.

SIGN UP NOW: The first of several virtual events begins on February 28th, with several school seats already sold. For more information about bringing Peter to YOUR school (and info about other virtual events) click below...

Teaching Lifelong Learning Strategies
    Learning Differences Conference March 31 & April 1, 2006
Dr. Bethany Roditi and Dr. Lynn Meltzer (pictured at left) at The Research Institute for Learning and Development (ResearchILD) are busily organizing the 21st Annual Learning Differences Conference. This year the conference will examine the latest neuropsychological research on executive function processes and the application of this research to everyday practice. The conference will include cutting-edge work on assessment and teaching strategies that address executive function processes and their impact on academic performance and organizational skills.

ResearchILD is home to the researchers and authors of FableVision's popular learning strategy software products BrainCogs and Essay Express. FableVision is proud to support ResearchILD's metacognitive "process-not-content" learning approach that supports students who learn differently- and who are being debilitated by the current testing-obsessed system.

The FableVision team will join ResearchILD at the Conference and showcase the BrainCogs & Essay Express software applications. Hope to see you there!

Journal Note from the Rotten Green Peppers Road Tour
Brain Builders Tutoring Keeps Kids Plugged In
Our friends at Brain Builders Tutoring (BBT) of White Plains NY were early adopters of BrainCogs metacognition software when it was released in 2002, and also the Essay Express companion writing software upon its launch in Sept 2005. The team at BBT provides specialized educational services to children with special learning needs related to reading, writing, memory and information storage and retrieval issues. Heather White, BBT Director and Founder, shares how both BrainCogs and Essay Express work with their students. "They love the Rotten Green Peppers rock band. The kids really connect with the characters in the band so they listen differently than they would in the classroom or with an adult." She went on to say that the students like to know that they aren't the only learners with these issues.

According to White, their students, even those on the autism spectrum, enjoy Essay Express because, "they can work on their essay in small doses so it becomes less overwhelming. Essay Express provides a formula, a visual picture of what needs to happen. They practice the strategies, and take them away and apply them at school and beyond". BOTEC (Brainstorm, Organize, Topic Sentence, Evidence, Conclusion), the Triple Note Tote, and Cartooning are particularly popular strategies with the students at BBT. One third grader recently shared upon his arrival, "Hey, I used that cartooning idea the other day -and it worked!"For more information on Brain Builders, visit www.bbtutoring.c om

Mexico Helps Its Students Make Their Mark
Reynolds' DOT & ISH Chosen for National Reading Program
Peter H. Reynolds was recently recognized by the Mexican government by having his books, The Dot and Ish chosen for distribution to nearly every student in the country as part of the National Reading Program developed by the Secretary of Public Education.

The Dot and Ish were chosen from more than 12,000 titles submitted for possible selection. Teachers representing all 32 states of the Mexican Republic - including the most remote and rural schools.

Peter went down to Mexico City to celebrate the good news - and spread his message about the bravery needed for self-expression and creativity. Special thanks to Daniel Goldin at Edicioneserres in Mexico for "connecting the dots" and helping make all this happen!
