August 2006 FableVision's FableFlash
A FableFlash Message from Paul Reynolds
    Good-bye Summer Vacation!
Sister Jane just found this old photo of Peter and me on one of our beach vacation adventures to Old Orchard Beach, Maine after our 19-hour car trips (with 4 children!) from our birthplace close to Toronto. Can you tell who is who?

As we put our sand pails and flip flops away, we're getting ready for a very busy autumn . . . with our move to the Boston Children's Museum, our big celebration party on December 1st, a new semester of students as I launch my 17th year of undergrad teaching at Boston College, and many travels, speaking events, book launch parties, product news, etc.

We hope you enjoy this FableFlash that once again attempts to scoop some of the avalanche of fun news, inspirational stories and useful info/links to help you on YOUR learning mission as the new school year launches.

Saving Lives One Web Activity at a Time
FableVision & NFPA Create Fire Safety Tip On-Line Activity
The team at FableVision has once again paired up with our friends at the National Fire Protection Association and created an on-line activity to help very young children learn important facts about fire safety - including designating a meeting place outside in case of a fire, or picking two possible exits from one's house.

FableVision also created several animated films to teach young children about fire safety including Where There's Smoke There's Science and a refreshing update to Sparky the Fire Dog called Sparky Says: Join My Fire Safety Club. All these projects hold special significance to us since Peter Reynolds' daughter woke up in the middle of the night when she was eleven years old and found her room engulfed in flame and smoke. Sarah escaped, but it helped us realize that there are some "stories that matter" that we just had to help tell. Check them out if you get a chance - they may just save a life.

Interested in a Hands-On Approach to Curriculum Design?
Constructivist Curriculum Design Conference in New York Focuses on Team Decisions
Last month FableVision was introduced to the Constructivist Design Conference on Educational Improvement at Saint Lawrence University in upstate New York - and we were duly impressed! Run by the Institute for Learner Centered Education, teachers, parents, administrators AND students work side by side for a week every summer to create learner- centered, constructivist curricula. Together the teams practice what they preach - using constructivist approaches to sharing and integrating learner-centric, best-practice strategies in the classroom. How many educational conference actually invite STUDENTS into the dialogue as an integral part of the agenda?

Conference Co-Founder Don Mesibov's daughter Marli hosted several FableVision virtual seminars that connected our team in Boston to the conference teams using the Elluminate Live synchronous learning platform.

Stay tuned for more collaboration between FableVision and the Institute for Learner Centered Education!

Feeling Overscheduled? Read SO FEW OF ME!
New Book From Peter H. Reynolds Now Available
FableVision's CEO and Founder Peter H. Reynolds is celebrating his latest book release - "So Few of Me"! USA TODAY's Bob Minzesheimer gave So Few of Me a great spotlight last week: "Leo is a busy boy with a to-do list that stretches across two pages in the latest modern fable from the creator of The Dot and Ish. Leo is so busy that he wishes there were "two of me." He gets his wish; but with even more things to do, Leo keeps multiplying until there are 10 Leos, "each one busier than the next." Reynolds' simple watercolors complement his sweetly subversive message: "Leo wondered, 'What if I did less — but did my BEST? Then one Leo is all I need. Just me, just one ... with time to dream." Left unanswered for overachieving parents: How will Leo, with that attitude, ever get into Harvard or Stanford?"

Along with being a great gift for overscheduled families/children, So Few of Me is also a perfect gift for educators and a great addition to professional development programs!

Quick Thinking Teacher Crafts Special 'Katrina' Welcome
Stationery Studio Software Makes a Difference
Dr. Peggy Healy Stearns, designer of FableVision's Stationery Studio software, heard this amazing story on the shuttle bus at the NECC conference in San Diego. Charlotte Brown from Pace Academy Lower School in Atlanta, GA, had no idea she was recounting her tale about using Stationery Studio to the author herself! Read Charlotte's story here, which she sent along to us to share with you:

I am the Lower School computer teacher at Pace Academy in Atlanta, GA. Last September, after Hurricane Katrina released her wrath on the Gulf Coast, our school opened its doors to a number of students from New Orleans whose schools were unable to operate. One particular student, a fourth grade girl, moved to Atlanta with her mother and was due to start school the next Monday. We learned the Friday afternoon before that she was starting early, that same day!

I was scheduled to teach her future classmates during the last 45-minute period of that day. When they arrived at the lab, their homeroom teacher told me about their new student and was clearly disappointed that they had not had an opportunity to write notes of welcome to their new classmate. When she asked if I could help her out, I knew I needed to change my lesson plan for that afternoon; I also suspected that Stationery Studio, which I had recently purchased, would be a perfect choice for what I hoped to accomplish.

As the children arrived, I gave them a brief explanation of how Stationery Studio works. I was delighted to see that they were immediately infatuated with the wonderful graphics and format choices. They needed little or no motivation from me! For the remainder of that period, they worked diligently and happily. When the time came for their homeroom teacher to pick them up, I was able to hand her a complete set of beautiful welcome letters the new student could read over the weekend. Fortunately, she was still in the building and received them directly from her new homeroom teacher before she left the school.

I have since used Stationery Studio for other correspondence, invitations, poems and posters. It continues to be a favorite with both students and teachers!

Partnership Reaches out to Youth With a Powerful Message
THE DOT Encourages Kids to Be Brave and Express Themselves
At Waltham Partnership for Youth's annual breakfast Peter H. Reynolds captivated the audience with a moving presentation featuring his book The Dot. Peter applauded the group's efforts to find creative ways to inspire kids to navigate their full potential - no matter what the odds.

As Peter notes, "It takes a brave heart to lead the life we are meant to live - and that message can never be echoed enough. That's why organizations like this are so important - to help keep amplifying these themes in a distracted and noisy world we live in today."

The Waltham Partnership for Youth purchased a copy of The Dot for each of its 25 board members who will read the book to several elementary classes in all seven of Waltham’s elementary schools at the beginning of the school year. We're cheering them on!

Constructivist Software Classic Shines Even Brighter!
Students Create Their Own Video Games with StarLOGO!
Peter H. Reynolds has been a long-time fan and advocate of the great constructivist ventures at MIT – including good friend MIT Professor Seymour Papert, the father of educational computing and one of the creators of the Logo programming language. As Peter points out, “I’ve always loved Logo – it’s the best kind of software there is – one that invites the learner to create – and not just digest prepackaged digital content.” On one of our recent visits to MIT’s Education Arcade we were excited to have an unveiling by Eric Kopfler and Eric Rosenbaum of the new version of Logo – aka StarLOGO “The Next Generation”!

Building on the Logo tradition of making programming accessible to new and experienced users alike, the new StarLogo TNG lowers the barrier to programming and helps learners of all ages to create their OWN computer games and simulations – with rich 3D environments and agents. Download now and let the games begin!

SPOTLIGHT WORD OF THE MONTH - mesmerize

Do you know the story behind “mesmerize”?
In 1778, the Austrian doctor Franz Anton Mesmer introduced his theory of "animal magnetism." He claimed that he could use magnets and superhuman powers to cure sick patients. His patients sat in tubs of water that contained magnets, and he would convince them that they felt better as a result. He spoke so powerfully that his patients often were spellbound by his voice, believing whatever he told them. Taking this treatment was soon referred to as being mesmerized.
